IMPACT’S Making an IMPACT Initiative Celebrates the First Half of 2019

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC: 19 August 2019 – In the first half of 2019, IMPACT’s employees continued their generous efforts via the Making an IMPACT (MAI) community service initiative. Together, we held several donation drives for various charities, as well as our annual March Madness charity bracket contest.

Skype a Scientist

In January, the MAI team encouraged staff at IMPACT to participate with Skype a Scientist. Skype a Scientist is a program where individuals with a scientific background sign up to have a short Skype session with an elementary school classroom and answer questions that they may have about what science entails. This program allows students in rural areas to meet scientists, learn that they are relatable and normal, and to see that a career in science is achievable for students like them.

Valentine’s Day

In February, the MAI team filled and distributed Valentine‑themed goody bags to each IMPACT employee. It was our way of showing how much we appreciate the awesome folks we have the privilege of working with! The bags contained thoughtful items including handcrafted wine glass charms, wildflower seeds, and of course a few sweet treats.

March Madness

In March, IMPACT hosted our 5th annual “March Madness” NCAA basketball charity bracket fundraiser! Many thanks to the IMPACT employees, family members, and friends who participated; together we raised $630.00! Following a donation from the Making an IMPACT team, we were able to donate a total of $1500.00 to the top 3 charities, Partners in Health, Chatham Area Network for Therapeutic Riding, and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Our participants have such diverse passions and the mission statements for the winning charities are as follows:

  • The mission of Partners in Health is to provide the best health care option for the poor. By establishing long-term relationships with sister organizations based in settings of poverty, Partners in Health strives to achieve two overarching goals: to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them and to serve as an antidote to despair.
  • The mission of Chatham Area Network for Therapeutic Riding is to provide equine-assisted activities and therapies in Central NC to individuals with physical, emotional or developmental disabilities, alongside their typically developing peers when possible; to educate our community about people with disabilities and equine-related activities; to link people with disabilities to equine professionals; and to engage people in volunteer work to achieve a positive result for themselves and for their community.
  • The mission of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of the founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.

Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis

In April, IMPACT employees banded together to raise $2490 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides Walk! Unfortunately, the event itself got rained out, but we sincerely appreciate everyone’s contribution! Thanks to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for rewarding us with an ice cream social!

American Red Cross Blood Drive

On May 2, 2019 MAI organized and sponsored a blood drive for the American Red Cross. IMPACT provided dedicated space for participant check-in, as well as pizza and refreshments for blood donors and Red Cross staff. The drive was a success, with 25 units of blood collected from 29 donors, including 14 donors from IMPACT!

Every 2 seconds, someone in the US needs blood, and the Red Cross holds approximately 500 blood drives every day. Blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those battling cancer. A single donation can potentially save up to 3 lives! The Red Cross provides approximately 40% of our nation’s blood and blood components, all from generous volunteer donors. To learn more about donating blood, click here.

The Women’s Center of Raleigh and the Durham Rescue Mission Donation Drives

In May, the Making an IMPACT initiative focused on the homeless community in our area by collecting donations for The Women’s Center and the Durham Rescue Mission. Together, we filled an entire car with much needed supplies and food!

The Women’s Center is a multi‑service crisis intervention and assessment center, located near downtown Raleigh. They provide a safe, low barrier, client-centered and trauma-informed environment for homeless women, where they can begin the stabilization and healing process. The Durham Rescue Mission was founded in November 1974 by Dr. and Mrs. Ernie Mills with one goal in mind: to mend shattered lives by restoring families and giving hope in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

Hockey Charity Brackets

In May, IMPACT hosted our 2nd annual Hockey Playoffs charity bracket fundraiser! While all of our favorite teams lost and no one predicted the eventual winner, we had a lot of fun along the way. Many thanks to the IMPACT employees, family members, and friends who participated; together, along with Making an IMPACT, we raised $500.00!

The proceeds of our bracket challenge went to the Humboldt Broncos. Last April, a junior ice hockey team (members under the age of 20) that plays in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League was travelling by bus when they were involved in a terrible accident, killing 16 members of their team and injuring many others. A fund has been set up for the families and those still recovering from injuries and more information can be found on their GoFundMe page.

 Book Harvest Book Drive

In June, the MAI teamed up with IMPACT’s newest initiative, IMPACT on Literacy to hold a book drive to collect books for Book Harvest, an organization whose mission is to provide an abundance of books and literacy support to families and their children to ensure that children become lifelong reader and learners.

IMPACT employees supported Book Harvest by donating 132 books for children and young adults!

IMPACT is proud to partner with Book Harvest and is very thankful for local organizations such as these for supporting our community.

As part of the MAI initiative, IMPACT employees come together as a team for larger community projects several times a year. Projects are chosen based on charities or efforts that have strong connections to IMPACT employees and their families. In addition, IMPACT supports and promotes their employees’ efforts to give back to their community by providing them 4 hours of paid time off per month to pursue volunteer work.
